Hong Kong Events - August 2027

What August 2027 is like in Mong Kok

August is the most typhoon-prone month of the Hong Kong year and the wettest after June. The Observatory's 1991–2020 normals give a mean temperature of 28.7 °C, a mean daily maximum of 31.3 °C, 453.2 mm of rain and 4.17 days on average under a tropical-cyclone warning signal No. 1 or above — the highest of any month, and more than three times May's figure.

One more thing shapes this page: August 2027 has no general holiday at all. The gazetted 2027 list runs holidays in January, February, March, April, May, June, July, September, October and December — August is not on it. So the month is carried by a lunar observance, the trade fair calendar and the tail of the school break rather than by a long weekend, and the planning advice is different: pick days to dodge the rain rather than days that follow a holiday.

Dates confirmed for August 2027

Hungry Ghost Festival / Yu Lan — Ghost Day, Monday 16 August 2027

A fixed lunar date, no organiser needed. The seventh lunar month runs from 2 August to 31 August 2027 and its fifteenth day — Ghost Day — is Monday 16 August, per the Observatory's conversion table. In the older districts the month is marked with roadside offerings, joss paper and temporary bamboo-stage Cantonese opera, which the Tourism Board describes on its own site.

It is the most atmospheric fortnight of the year in old Kowloon and it costs nothing, but it is a religious observance rather than a show: watch from the street and don't photograph people at prayer.

HKTDC Food Expo PRO and Hong Kong International Tea Fair — Thursday 12 to Saturday 14 August 2027

Confirmed, and the trade side of the week. HKTDC's own 2027 fair listings and the Tourism Board's meetings-and-exhibitions arm both carry Food Expo PRO and the International Tea Fair at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre from 12 to 14 August 2027.

Be clear about what those dates are. Food Expo PRO is the trade fair: registered trade buyers on 12 and 13 August, and open to the public by ticket on Saturday 14 August. The International Tea Fair, in the same halls, admits trade and public visitors on all three days. The public Food Expo is a separate fair in the same building and it runs longer — Thursday 12 to Monday 16 August 2027 — so that is the one to book for samples and the final-day sell-off.

Exhibitions opening in August 2027

M+ — M+ Sigg Collection: City Lives

Month confirmed, day not published. The fourth outing of the M+ Sigg Collection opens in the Sigg Galleries in August 2027, per M+’s 2027 programme announcement. It traces the shift in Chinese contemporary art from socialist-realist painting towards private, intimate work.

In a month with no long weekend and a real chance of a signal-8 day, this is the anchor: a West Kowloon museum afternoon is the one plan rain cannot cancel.

That same week

The public Food Expo. HKTDC's own fair page gives the public fair's 2027 dates as Thursday 12 to Monday 16 August 2027, in the same halls as the trade fair. Check hktdc.com for its opening hours and ticketing before you travel.

Classes and workshops

Daily tai chi with the resident master — Cordis, Hong Kong

9–10am, poolside on Level 42 at 555 Shanghai Street. Complimentary for in-house hotel guests only, booked in advance on (852) 3552 3510 — which is the honest way to read it: a reason to stay in Mong Kok rather than a class open to the street.

LCSD district recreation programmes — Yau Tsim Mong

The Leisure and Cultural Services Department runs tai chi and sports courses year-round through its district leisure-services offices in Yau Tsim Mong, some free. The list is seasonal and the fees are set per programme, so check lcsd.gov.hk for August's rather than relying on a printed price.

Cantonese cooking and pastry courses — Hong Kong New Oriental Culinary Art

Small-group Cantonese and pastry courses in certificate and masterclass formats, at 93 King's Road, North Point — Hong Kong Island, not Mong Kok. The school's own site lists fees in the HK$5,500–6,800 range depending on format.

Before you go

Ladies Market trades 12:00–23:00 daily, and the only day it closes is the first day of Chinese New Year — so August's lack of a public holiday means the stalls keep ordinary hours all month. The pages worth opening before a late-summer trip are opening hours (which also covers the pedestrian zone), how to get there and what the stalls actually sell.

How to keep up

This page is checked monthly and only prints what a source dates. The listings that move first are the Hong Kong Tourism Board's events pages, HKTDC's fair calendar, the LCSD programme list and Time Out Hong Kong. This page was last checked on 26 October 2026.

Confirmed vs expected: August 2027 has no general holiday, so nothing on this page rests on one; Ghost Day (Monday 16 August) is a fixed lunar date, the Food Expo PRO and Tea Fair dates (12–14 August) are HKTDC's confirmed trade-fair dates, and the public Food Expo's own 2027 run is 12–16 August; M+’s opening day and every mall's summer programme are unpublished and are not printed as dates.

SHOPPING AND FOOD

While often visited for the view the visitor should not forget that The Market encompasses a wide range of shopping and eating choices. Mongkok is well known for snack food and as well as budget choices.
