Ladies Market History
In the old days, it was not easy to get a job. Many people ended up being hawkers on the street to earn a living. Due to the various problems caused by illegal hawkers, the Hong Kong government decided to define "authorized hawkering zone" in 1975. Twenty zones were allocated in Kowloon and the the section of Tung Choi Street between Argyle Street and Shan Tung Street is the first zone they defined.
At the beginning, most hawkers sell ladies clothes and accessories there so it get the name "Ladies Street" or "Ladies Market". As the market gets more famous and busier, the government has extended it to Dundas Street. In Aug 2000, the Ladies Street had a test run of "Pedestrian Only Zone". 4p.m. to 11p.m. from Monday to Saturday and noon till 11p.m. on public holiday is for pedestrian only. In Dec the same year, the plan was confirm.
Nowadays, Ladies Market is not just famous around the locals, many tourists visit there for cheap shopping and souvenir too.
